Agnes Obel - Citizen of Glass

Words are dead... Beautiful.

Bruno Mars - 24K Magic

Recommended by Bex:

I listened to 24K Magic last night while handling and cleaning my hamster. I don't consider this Bruno's intended audience (more candlelight and minimal clothing), but we enjoyed it nonetheless.

The length of the album also makes it an easy listen. I'm playing it again right now, it's a beautiful blend of sensual and soulful.

All Saints - Saints & Sinners

Recommended by Bex:

Arguably the most accomplished release, along with 2016's Red Flag. 'Black Coffee', particularly Version 2, is incredible. #MonthofAllSaints

All Saints - All Saints

Recommended by Bex:

I finally saw the All Saints and all my childhood dreams came true. #MonthofAllSaints

Evanescence - Fallen

Recommended by Bex:

The 2003 classic, combining elements of nu-metal with gothic rock.

'Bring Me to Life' and 'My Immortal' both appear on the excellent Daredevil soundtrack. I always wanted to be Elektra. ❤

Ellie Goulding - Delirium

Recommended by Bex:

This has really grown on me. Initially I felt there were too many tracks and a lot of production, but persevere and it is a great listen.

I added the new track from Bridget Jones's Baby, 'Still Falling for You', to my tracklist. That makes 26 tracks! Luckily variety is the spice of life.

JoJo - Mad Love.

Recommended by Bex:

As Joanna 'JoJo' Levesque posted on album release day: 'Tears of joy on and off. Today has been a dream. I love you madly'.

She has fought long and hard to release another album. After ten long years of self-releasing material, she is back and now a complete bad ass. Profanity or not, 'F*** Apologies.' is the best thing I have heard in years.

Ariana Grande – Dangerous Woman

Recommended by Bex:

I love this album, it's funky, sensual and a little bit naughty on the side. Album of the year so far.

Gwen Stefani - This Is What the Truth Feels Like

Recommended by Bex:

Fantastic comeback for Gwen, who is as cool and beautiful as she was when 'Don't Speak' rocked my world in 1996.

Alesha Dixon - Fired Up

Recommended by Bex:

This week I massively re-engaged with Mis-Teeq's back catalogue and, in doing so, acquired a copy of the 2003 Red Room Sessions release. There's no doubt hits like 'Scandalous' and 'One Night Stand' still sound current.

By extension, I also became interested in Alesha's solo work. I own a copy of The Entertainer, but otherwise hadn't delved much further. Ever intrigued by releases that don't make the cut I discovered Fired Up, which was postponed indefinitely and released only in Japan.

This album bears the most similarities to her work with Mis-Teeq. I was surprised to instantly recognise both 'Lipstick' and 'Knockdown', making it all the more clear this album should have seen the light of day.

Paul McCartney - Pure McCartney

Recommended by Bex:

Paul McCartney and his music need no introduction. Together with three of his friends, he changed the cultural landscape forever.

Paul's accomplishments since then as a member of Wings and a solo artist make for a staggering body of work that stands proudly alongside those eight sensational years with The Beatles.

The deluxe edition features 67 tracks, more than 40 of which were Top 40 hits including 'Maybe I'm Amazed', 'Live and Let Die', 'Ebony and Ivory', 'Dance Tonight' and 'New'.

Katy B - Honey

Recommended by Bex:

As Consequence of Sound rather passionately assert: Katy B is a master of capturing that oceanic feeling when individuality melts away, and every soul rises and falls together on the wave of the beat.

Essential tracks include 'Water Rising', 'Dark Delirium', and 'I Wanna Be'

Fergie - The Dutchess

Recommended by Bex:

An oldie but a goodie. After a recent dance class, a few drinks turned into impromptu karaoke, cocktails and rapping to 'Fergalicious' at 3am.

Basement Jaxx - The Singles

Recommended by Bex:

This compilation is a great way for anyone who doesn't own any albums to get an overview of their work. Whilst not always at the forefront of the electronic and dance music scene, in terms of taking the charts by storm, the Jaxx have been very influential since 1999's Remedy.

Notably absent is the super sleazy 'Get Me Off'. That video = ❤.

All Saints - Red Flag

Recommended by Bex:

Great comeback from the edgy girl group I grew up with. While I'm no stranger to the guilty pleasures of 90s pop music - my recent playlists have featured B*Witched, Aqua, Alisha's Attic and the Spice Girls - I always enjoyed the comparative rawness of All Saints.

'One Strike' is arguably their best single since 'Pure Shores', and 'Ratchet Behaviour' is simple but distinctive. You can preview the album here.

SWV - Greatest Hits

Recommended by Bex:

A surprising variety of SWV (short for Sisters with Voices) hits albums are in circulation. None quite hit the mark (often too balad oriented), but I edited the 1999 BMG version for a definitive collection of tracks.

For the tracklist, or an upload, comment on this post.

Rihanna - ANTI

Recommended by Bex:

The darkness of Rated R, mixed with the coolness of Unapologetic, Rihanna has delivered her most cohesive album to date. It's smooth and chilled, with an undertone of anger and resentment. Finally I feel like we've got below the surface of Rihanna's pop exterior.

Seriously though, where is 'Bitch Better Have My Money'? I think it should have made the deluxe version and can't stop listening to it recently.

FKA twigs - LP1

Recommended by Bex:

FKA twigs has steadily been growing on me throughout 2015. I'd rate her my favourite modern singer, alongside Tinashe. Tahliah Debrett Barnett (twigs) is artistic, bass-driven, and a very sensual performer.

Sunday 10 January 2016

Justin Bieber - Purpose

Recommended by Bex:

If you had told me I'd recommend Bieber a year ago, or even one month, I'd have been somewhat surprised. Since turning 30, my tastes don't seem to conform any more (if they ever did) and I happily like what I like.

He's also really hot, and at a fanciable age now!

Natalie Imbruglia - Male

Recommended by Bex:

A few years ago, I actively sought every Natalie recording: the live tracks, the b-sides, the bonus tracks, and I came to the conclusion that she doesn't have a single bad song.

While by no means my favourite of her albums, it is highly recommended. These are great covers from an amazing singer who gives her own, albeit safe, version rather than a straight copy. If you like what you hear, try the first two albums and, her latest original release, Come to Life.
